Managing your Stuff - Hidden Treasures

 






What are my Values?


Have you got an under stair cupboard?
Or - How does your garage look?
Is it so full of ‘stuff’ that you struggle to get the car in there?


Have you got a cupboard full of things you just can't bear to part with?
How could this teach us a good lesson about how valuable God's work is to us?


Have you got boxes and boxes - cupboards full of things you ‘need’, or can't do without?

We’re all guilty of it - having too much stuff.


Boxes full of memories and missed opportunities.

But instead of being happy memories that have a positive influence on us, these memories, these things we absolutely can't do without, end up weighing us down.



If an authority came along and said " you have to pack up your things and leave this home". This home that you have made so many happy memories in,... but what's more they say …. "The place we are moving you to is only one third the size of this home you’re in right now.."

And you get taken to look at this new house.  It's nice and new. It has all the modern conveniences,  but it doesn't have your memories in it.  And it doesn't have a shed, or a garage.  And there's no under stairs storage cupboard, and you realise that you are going to have to reduce the things you own to one third of what you have right now…


It's not a nice situation to be in is it? And perhaps some of us have had to face that situation. 

But here's the key thing - What are we going to keep? And how much will we fight to keep those items of value?


Side point - have you ever had the threat of a natural  disaster to help you to focus on what's important in your life?
It's amazing how the threat that you may lose the lot - The house, and everything in it, except what you can fit in a suitcase and a few boxes - can make you think seriously about just what is of most importance.
It's a nice exercise to give yourself sometimes, because often, our now - is so full up with old clutter, that we can't move on and live life to the full, or see what's important and plan for the future.



If it was all going to be gone tomorrow - just what would matter - just what would you actually  miss?

Most of our memories are safely locked away in our head. We recall the object or the photo in our mind's eye - and we remember the happy thoughts that went with them.

We didn't really need to see them with our literal eyes after all. 

How often do we actually take those prized possessions out of their boxes and reminisce fondly?

Does owning it really matter that much? Aren't the feelings attached to those items safely locked away in our heart?
Or perhaps those items we clutter our lives with, are actually weighing us down with negative emotions,  and stop us from moving forward.

We really do need to stop living in the past and make room for now and the future, and for those around us who love us for who we are, and what we are today.



Having said that though - 
If it's at all possible, when moving house,  we'll hang onto some items because they hold such great value to us. Maybe,  we'll even keep those treasures in a box 
 and never let them out of our sight.  They may stay with us for the whole journey, always close by.



And here's the lesson friends,... do we hold onto Bible truths with the same effort, and with just as much conviction?  Do we hold it close and never let it out of our sight. ?

“Again the Kingdom of the heavens is like a traveling merchant seeking fine pearls. 46  Upon finding one pearl of high value, he went away and promptly sold all the things he had and bought it.

For a bagful of wisdom is worth more than one full of pearls.

If you keep seeking for it as for silver,
And you keep searching for it as for hidden treasures;

“The Kingdom of the heavens is like a treasure, hidden in the field, that a man found and hid; and because of his joy, he goes and sells everything he has and buys that field.

Above all else, do we cling to it and let other things go?

Business opportunities? Expensive possessions? Friends and maybe even family?! 

On finding a pearl of great value, would we sell everything else to have it?


So we come back to our lead in question, and I'll leave you with this - ‘How important is God's work to me’ ?
